Italian Allegations at Euro 2004

After a dismal performance in Euro 2004, Italy can still save themselves from first round elimination if they beat Bulgaria and Denmark and Sweden do anything but draw 2-2. The Italians look after their own house with a last-gasp winner from Cassano, but at almost the same time the Swedes make it 2-2 and the allegations begin.

Italy team Manager Gigi Riva accuses the Scandinavians of “a great acting performance, pretending to be happy when taking the lead, yet always conceding an equaliser.” The Italian State broadcaster RAI actually installs extra cameras at the match to catch any controversial incidents. The only thing the Italians catch is an early plane home.

Roma and Rolex Scandal

In 1999, AS Roma decide to send out two gold Rolex watches, totalling 25 million lire, to influential match officials. They also send out another 37 silver ones to the 37 League referees. La Gazzetta Dello Sport claims this is a “vulgar episode” in Italy’s sporting culture and the Italian Soccer Federation demand that these “inappropriate” Christmas presents are sent back. It also transpires that Inter have sent a muscle exerciser to each referee worth 1.6 million lire. Poor old Torino and Treviso can only rustle up salami and packets of pasta.
